French Terracotta Mixing Bowl

A French terracotta mixing bowl of the type historically used in rural French kitchens for mixing, preparing and storing food. Known in the south of France as a tian, this French terracotta mixing bowl represents a long tradition of utilitarian earthenware production, with examples like this found across Provence and the broader Mediterranean region. The form is characteristic of hand-thrown country pottery produced for everyday domestic use.

The bowl is wheel-thrown from a red-orange terracotta clay body, unglazed on the exterior and base, with a warm amber-brown lead-free glaze covering the interior and the rolled, ridged rim. The glaze shows the natural drip lines and pooling typical of traditional kiln firing, giving the surface a varied, matte-to-gloss finish. Small nubs or pinched handles appear at opposing points on the rim, a practical feature for lifting. The exterior retains the raw, slightly gritty texture of the fired clay, with minor surface marks consistent with age and use. No maker's mark, stamp or signature is visible on the base. No chips, cracks or repairs are apparent from the photos.

The bowl measures 23.5cm diameter x 10cm height / 9.3" x 3.9". The wide, shallow profile and sturdy rim make it well suited to its original mixing function.
