French Terracotta Mixing Bowl

A French terracotta mixing bowl of the type known regionally as a tian, used historically in French rural households for mixing, preparing and sometimes baking. This French terracotta mixing bowl displays the unglazed exterior and glazed interior construction typical of utilitarian pottery produced in southern and central French workshops from the late 19th into the early 20th century.

The exterior is unglazed, showing the natural warm amber-red terracotta clay body with visible throwing lines and diagonal tool marks running down the sides from rim to base. The interior carries a lead-red to dark amber glaze, applied solidly and showing the slight pooling and surface variation characteristic of hand-dipped period glazing. The rim is broad and flat with a small integrated pouring spout, glazed on its upper surface. The form tapers toward a solid flat foot, unglazed on the base. No maker's mark, stamp or pottery signature is visible on the underfoot, which shows raw terracotta with natural grog inclusions and minor surface wear consistent with age and use.

The bowl measures approximately 30.5cm diameter x 12cm height, which converts to 12" x 4.7". This is a generously sized form, practical for display as well as for its original mixing function.

A well-preserved example of everyday French country pottery, this tian bowl suits rustic farmhouse interiors and sits naturally alongside linen, wood and natural material styling. It is also of interest to collectors of regional French slipware and utilitarian ceramics.
