French Terracotta Glazed Mixing Bowl

A French terracotta glazed mixing bowl of the type commonly known as a tian, used historically in southern French kitchens for mixing, preparing and sometimes baking. This French terracotta glazed mixing bowl follows a form that was produced in significant quantities across rural French pottery workshops from the 19th century onward, intended for everyday domestic use rather than decorative purposes.

The bowl is thrown in red earthenware clay, left unglazed on the exterior and base, which retains the natural brick-red terracotta surface with visible firing marks, mineral spotting and age-related patina. The interior and upper rim receive a rich amber-red lead-type glaze that pools slightly toward the center, creating variation in depth and tone across the surface. The rim is finished with a raised, multi-ridged collar detail and features small pinched spouts at two opposing points, a practical feature for pouring liquids during food preparation. The glaze shows crazing and wear consistent with age and use, and the exterior presents minor surface pitting. The base is flat and unglazed, showing tool marks and use wear. No maker's mark, stamp or signature is visible on the base or body.

The bowl measures 29.5cm diameter x 12.5cm height / 11.6" diameter x 4.9" height. This is a generous working size, practical for table use or display.
