A French faux bamboo mirror dating from the late 19th to early 20th century, representative of the Japonisme-influenced decorative style that was widely popular in France during that period. The French faux bamboo mirror format -- a square or rectangular glass plate set within a turned wood frame designed to replicate bamboo jointing -- was produced in quantity by French craftsmen and remains one of the most recognizable pieces of that era's decorative output.
The frame is constructed from turned cherrywood or fruitwood, shaped and scored at regular intervals to simulate the nodes of bamboo cane. The warm honey-brown tone of the wood is consistent and shows an even patina developed over more than a century of age. Each corner is formed by a cross-joint where the vertical and horizontal members intersect and extend beyond the corner, producing the characteristic protruding ends that identify this frame type. Dark grooved banding at each node joint adds visual definition to the faux bamboo effect. The mirror glass is original and shows foxing -- small dark oxidation spots visible in several areas of the plate surface -- which is entirely consistent with antique mercury or early silver-backed glass of this age. The foxing is clearly visible in the close-up photographs and should be considered part of the item's age character. The frame itself is in good condition with minor surface wear appropriate to its age.
