French Copper Stockpot Villedieu

Made by L. Lecellier under the Cuivralec brand, this French copper stockpot Villedieu comes from one of the most respected copperware-producing towns in Normandy. Villedieu-les-Poeles has been a center of copper craftsmanship since the Middle Ages, and pieces bearing the Cuivralec stamp represent solid mid-to-late 20th century production from that tradition. The maker's mark is clearly stamped on the interior of the lid, confirming its provenance.

The pot is made from heavy-gauge copper, measured at 2mm thickness, giving it substantial weight and excellent heat conductivity. The exterior retains its warm copper tone, polished to a good shine with some light surface scratches consistent with age and prior use. The interior is lined with tin, showing the characteristic silver-grey finish of hand-tinned copperware, with minor scuff marks but no exposed copper. The two side handles and the lid handle are cast brass, attached with steel rivets. The brass shows some natural patina and slight verdigris at the joints, which is typical and expected on vintage copper cookware of this type. The lid fits snugly and is stamped with the size marking 28.

The pot measures 28.5cm in diameter by 13.5cm in height (11.2" x 5.3"), with the lid adding a further few centimetres. Including handles, the overall width is approximately 36cm (14.2"). These are generous cooking dimensions, well suited to stock-making, braising, or large-batch cooking.

A piece like this appeals both to collectors of French copper cookware and to cooks who appreciate functional vintage kitchenware. The tin lining remains intact and serviceable. A light polish to the exterior copper would restore the surface further if desired, as noted by the seller.
