French Enamel Salt Box
Wall-mounted salt boxes of this type were standard fixtures in French kitchens from the late 19th century through the early 20th century, kept near the stove for easy access during cooking. This French enamel salt box is constructed from stamped steel coated in white enamel, with the word "Sel" lettered in blue Gothic script across the front — the French word for salt. The shaped back plate features a keyhole-shaped hanging loop at the top, allowing the box to be fixed directly to a wall.
The enamel finish is white overall with visible wear and chipping along the edges, particularly around the back plate, where the underlying black metal is exposed — consistent with age and regular kitchen use. The interior shows light surface rust and residual staining, also expected for a piece of this era. A half-round wooden lid in natural wood sits across the top of the cylindrical body, slightly darkened with age but intact and functional. The Gothic "Sel" lettering is printed in deep cobalt blue and remains clearly legible. The body has a ribbed band running around its lower section, a typical decorative detail on French enamelware of this period.
Dimensions: 19cm wide x 12cm deep x 25.5cm tall / 7.5" x 4.7" x 10". The container offers a useful interior capacity for storing coarse or fine salt.
A piece of this kind suits a farmhouse or country kitchen setting and is sought by collectors of French enamelware and vintage kitchen antiques. It can be hung on a wall as originally intended or displayed on a shelf. The combination of the white enamel body, blue lettering and wooden lid is characteristic of French provincial kitchen accessories from the early 1900s.
