Veuve Clicquot champagne ice bucket
A Veuve Clicquot champagne ice bucket in polished aluminum, bearing the house's instantly recognizable orange and black shield badge lettered "CLICQUOT / VCP / CHAMPAGNE / Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin." Champagne houses commissioned these seau a champagne -- the French term for a champagne cooler -- by the hundreds for hotel dining rooms and brasseries across France, making them one of the most evocative pieces of mid-century French cafe culture. The aluminum construction, typical of pieces produced for professional use from the 1960s onward, keeps the bucket light yet sturdy.
The form is classic and well balanced: a gently tapered cylinder wrapped with three sets of turned ridges near the rim and base, flanked by two substantial ring handles on polished ball mounts that make it easy to carry to the table. The exterior has a high-polish finish that picks up light beautifully, while the interior shows the natural brushed surface of the spun aluminum. The applied enamel badge is bright and fully legible, a graphic focal point that reads clearly across a table. At home today, it works equally well chilling a bottle for a dinner party, holding a cluster of flowers on a sideboard, or displayed on a bar cart alongside glassware.
Condition and patina consistent with age. The interior shows light wear from use, and the base has the soft oxidation typical of polished aluminum over time; overall the piece presents well and retains its polish on the exterior.
Diameter is approx. 8.1 in (20.5 cm).
