Vintage Tropical Village Oil Painting on Canvas Signed Senegal 0910264

tropical village oil painting on canvas

Signed in the lower left corner with the name Victor Ry- followed by additional script, this tropical village oil painting on canvas brings to life a sun-drenched riverside settlement in Senegal. The paint is applied directly to a lightly textured canvas without a frame, a format popular among mid-century painters working in West Africa and the French-speaking tropics who preferred the immediacy of an unframed support. The scene is confident and fully resolved, suggesting the hand of a practiced artist working from life or close observation.

The composition unfolds across a vivid blue river, with thatched-roof stilt huts nestled among towering coconut palms, banana trees and a flowering pink tree on the left bank. A woman in a red dress walks through the village, while two children stand at the water's edge; on the river, a long pirogue carries passengers and a standing figure poles the craft from the stern. In the distance, green fields roll toward soft purple hills beneath a sky of bright cumulus clouds. The palette is warm and saturated, with confident brushwork in the foliage and deft, loose strokes in the figures and water reflections. A small painted aircraft is just visible in the upper sky, a charming period detail. This tropical village oil painting on canvas would read beautifully above a sofa, in a library, or in any room that welcomes colour and a sense of place.

Condition and patina consistent with age. One small area of paint loss is visible in the sky near the aircraft, as seen in the close-up photo; the canvas edges show light wear typical of an unframed work.

Approx. 27.5 in wide x 17.9 in high (70 x 45.5 cm).
