Sarreguemines transferware bowl

Marked squarely on the base with a rectangular cartouche reading GROSEILLES / U & Cie / SARREGUEMINES, this Sarreguemines transferware bowl is a sturdy and handsome piece of French ironstone from the celebrated Alsace-Lorraine pottery, active since the late 18th century and long a fixture on French farmhouse tables. The form is a wide, low-sided serving bowl -- likely the base of a soupiere, used without its lid -- set on a sponge-decorated blue foot ring and fitted with two moulded side handles shaped as scrolling botanical sprigs.

The decoration is the appealing "Groseilles" pattern, meaning currants and gooseberries in French, rendered in a cool blue-grey transfer print on a warm cream ground. One face carries a sweeping branch of currants with lobed leaves; the other shows plump gooseberries clustered among thorned stems. The contrast between the graphic botanical motifs and the plain cream interior gives the bowl a classic French country character that reads well on an open kitchen shelf, a farmhouse sideboard or as a centrepiece fruit bowl. The sponged border at the foot is a detail typical of Sarreguemines production of the latter 19th century.

Condition and patina consistent with age. Light wear along the foot ring and a few minor surface marks to the interior glaze, all in keeping with a well-used antique piece.

Measured without the handles: approx. 9.4 in wide x 5.5 in deep (24 x 14 cm).
