red transferware wash set
A complete red transferware wash set in white ironstone, comprising a generous basin, a bulbous water pitcher and a small rectangular soap dish - the three pieces decorated in an exuberant all-over botanical pattern rendered in deep cranberry pink against a clean white ground. Before indoor plumbing became standard, this type of broc et bassine (pitcher-and-basin set) was a fixture on the washstand of every French bourgeois household, and a matching soap dish was the mark of a well-appointed chambre. The style and transfer technique point to late 19th-century English ironstone production, of the kind widely imported and used across France at that time.
The dense floral transfer combines peonies, sunflowers, morning glories and trailing foliage framed by a crisp diamond-and-dot border band that runs along the rim of each piece. The pitcher has a confident rounded form with a wide pouring lip and a solid loop handle; the basin is deep and broad-shouldered; the soap dish is shallow and rectangular with gently raised edges. The three pieces read as a cohesive set and would sit equally well on a bathroom shelf, a hallway console or a vintage-styled vanity. Collectors of red transferware or French farmhouse ceramics will find the color and the botanical graphic particularly appealing.
Condition and patina consistent with age. A small chip is present on the pitcher - visible in the photos - and the soap dish shows light surface crazing and minor age spotting in keeping with its years.
Soap dish: approx. 5.3 in wide x 3.5 in deep (13.5 x 9 cm). Pitcher: approx. 7.1 in wide x 5.5 in deep (18 x 14 cm). Basin: approx. 13.2 in wide x 3.9 in deep (33.5 x 10 cm).
