Moet Chandon champagne ice bucket

Bearing the crown-and-banner crest of the house founded in 1743, this Moet Chandon champagne ice bucket is a polished silver plate seau a champagne -- the classic French table-side vessel for keeping a bottle cold from aperitif through dessert. Stamped on the base "M.O.D Meaux Argit Made in France," it was produced by a French metalworks in Meaux and carries the Moet and Chandon branding in crisp black lettering across its gently tapered body.

The bucket's most appealing feature is the cast and applied grapevine garland that runs around the upper third of the body: clusters of grapes hang in full relief between broad vine leaves, and the same motif anchors the two ring handles, each loop passing through a sculpted bunch of grapes. The overall finish is a bright, mirror-polished that reflects light generously. Pieces like this circulated widely through French brasseries and hotel dining rooms and have found a comfortable second life as bar-cart centerpieces, hosting a bottle of Champagne or a bouquet of kitchen herbs with equal ease.

Condition and patina consistent with age. The interior shows light surface wear and minor residue marks typical of a bucket that has held ice; the exterior polish remains strong and appealing.

Approx. 7.9 in diameter (20 cm).
