Moet Chandon champagne ice bucket
A seau a champagne -- a French champagne ice bucket -- bearing the embossed name of Moet & Chandon, one of the great Champagne houses of Epernay. The form is the classic French restaurant cooler: a wide-mouthed cylinder that tapers toward the base to cradle a standard bottle, finished in a warm two-tone of polished silver plate on the upper body and a deeper copper-bronze tone below. Champagne buckets of this style were produced as branded service pieces for hotels, brasseries and grand restaurants throughout France, making them a familiar and appealing piece of French hospitality culture.
The embossed "MOET & CHANDON" lettering wraps the midsection in a framed panel that reads clearly from across a table. Two cast handles flank the rim, each decorated on the outer face with a relief of grapevine leaves -- a handsome detail that elevates the piece well beyond plain utility. The interior is a single tapered bowl of silver-tone metal, generously sized. Today it works as a drinks cooler on a bar cart, a planter on a sideboard, or simply as a graphic piece of French bar and wine collecting displayed on a shelf.
Condition and patina consistent with age. The copper-tone lower section shows honest surface wear and light oxidation, while the upper polished areas retain good reflectivity. Interior shows light use marks typical of a working service piece.
Approx. 7.5 in tall (19 cm).
