Italian Sardine Pot Stoneware
A utilitarian Italian sardine pot stoneware crock, wheel-thrown and glazed in a pale ivory-cream tone, typical of the large storage vessels produced across rural Italy for preserving sardines and other salted fish. These double-handled crocks were standard fixtures in Italian farmhouse and coastal kitchen larders, and examples in this form and glaze type circulated widely through the 19th and early 20th centuries. The piece was sourced in France, where Italian provisions crocks occasionally crossed borders through trade and migration routes.
The body is cylindrical with straight walls, a rolled and thickened rim, and two small loop handles applied at the upper body — a form consistent with Italian sardine pot stoneware production. The cream glaze is semi-gloss and covers the exterior fully, showing scattered dark speckling, mineral inclusions, and age-related surface pitting throughout. The interior retains visible wheel-throwing rings at the base, with patchy glaze wear and ochre-brown discolouration consistent with prolonged use and age. The unglazed flat foot shows heavily weathered, rough stoneware clay with surface encrustations and a warm sandy-beige body. No maker's mark, stamp or signature is visible on the base or body. A small turquoise glaze speck is visible on the lower body in one view — likely a kiln transfer from proximity to another glazed piece during firing.
Dimensions as stated by the seller: 16cm wide x 17cm tall / 6.3" wide x 6.7" tall. These correspond to a mid-sized storage crock, practical as a desk or kitchen organiser.
The worn patina, aged cream glaze, and robust cylindrical form make this crock a solid candidate for use as a utensil holder, planter liner, or display piece in a rustic or farmhouse interior scheme. Collectors of European country pottery and Italian peasant ware will find the honest, unrestored condition and visible age appealing.
