Italian Sardine Pot Stoneware

A utilitarian Italian sardine pot stoneware crock, cylindrical in form with two small loop handles positioned opposite each other at mid-body. Pieces of this type were produced in significant numbers across Italian rural potteries and were used to store and preserve sardines and other salted fish. The form is entirely consistent with known examples of this category of Southern European storage ware.

The body is wheel-thrown stoneware covered in an opaque lead glaze in a warm pinkish-beige tone. The glaze shows characteristic variation across the surface, with darker speckles and patches of uneven coverage visible throughout. The lower register of the body is largely unglazed, exposing the raw grey-brown clay beneath. A raised rim band runs around the top of the vessel, creating a shallow ledge. The two loop handles are hand-applied and show individual variation in shape; one is more rounded and the other somewhat flattened, consistent with hand-finishing. The interior is glazed throughout. The flat, unglazed base shows significant wear, surface grime, and age-related deposits consistent with genuine use and age. No maker's mark or stamp is visible on the base or body. Some surface crazing and dark spotting is visible on the glaze, along with minor chips at the rim.

The crock measures 14.5cm wide x 19cm tall / 5.7" wide x 7.5" tall. These dimensions refer to the body; the handles extend the overall width slightly beyond the stated measurement.

This type of two-handled stoneware crock has attracted consistent interest among collectors of European country pottery and works well as a display piece or vase for dried stems, as seen in the listing photos.
