Henriot Quimper Portrait Plates

Produced by the celebrated Henriot Quimper pottery in Brittany, France, this pair of Henriot Quimper portrait plates depicts a traditional Breton couple in regional costume, hand-painted in the distinctive faience style for which the Quimper manufactory has been known since the late 17th century. The backstamp on both plates reads "Henriot Quimper France" with additional hand-written codes: F.6 D.439 MJ on the male plate and F.6 D.499 He on the female plate, identifying the decorator and pattern references.

Each plate features a central medallion set against a cream ground, with a profile portrait rendered in fluid brushwork. The male figure wears a wide-brimmed black hat and a traditional embroidered jacket in black, golden yellow and cobalt blue. The female figure wears the characteristic tall Breton coiffe in white lace, with a black bodice and an embroidered panel in orange, golden yellow and pink. Both plates share a scalloped rim decorated with a bold sponged border in golden yellow and black, a style associated with the Art Deco period of Quimper production, approximately 1920s to 1940s. The painting is confident and stylised, with strong outlines typical of the period.

Each plate measures approximately 25cm in diameter (9.8 inches), as stated in the seller description. Condition is consistent with age and use, with minor surface wear expected on vintage faience of this type; no chips or cracks are apparent from the photos.
