French zinc flower bucket

A classic French zinc flower bucket of the kind that once lined the cool stone floors of French florist shops and covered markets, where florists known as fleuristes kept their cut stems fresh for the morning market. Made from galvanized zinc sheet with two fixed side handles, the bucket takes the tall tapered form -- wide at the mouth, narrowing toward the base -- that French flower vendors favored for displaying long-stemmed roses, dahlias and peonies upright and in generous bunches.

The surface carries the mottled, cloudy patina that develops naturally on zinc over decades of use: a shifting field of pale silver, soft gray and blue-white tones that no paint or treatment can convincingly replicate. The two loop handles are simply formed and neatly riveted to the upper body, a detail consistent with early twentieth-century French sheet-metal craft. Today this bucket is equally at home filled with garden flowers on a kitchen counter, holding branches or dried stems on a farmhouse dining table, or standing empty as a handsome object in its own right on a mantel or entryway shelf.

Condition and patina consistent with age. The exterior shows the mottled oxidation and surface wear expected of well-used zinc, with some rust visible at the interior base and light marks on the upper rim -- all part of the honest character of the piece.

Approx. 9.1 in wide x 15.0 in tall (23 x 38 cm).
