French Zinc Flower Bucket
A matched pair of French zinc flower buckets of the kind that stood in every French florist and flower market stall from the early to mid twentieth century. Fabricated from sheet zinc with a soldered seam and a double-rolled rim band, these seaux a fleurs -- flower buckets -- carry the classic tapered silhouette that made them practical for transporting and displaying cut stems. The form is purely utilitarian and all the more appealing for it, with a flat loop handle riveted to each side of the upper body.
The weathered zinc surface has deepened to a soft, mottled grey with areas of white oxidation and faint traces of what appears to be pink paint from a past market use, giving each piece the kind of honest character that decorators seek out. As a pair they work beautifully holding dried grasses, eucalyptus or seasonal branches on a farmhouse sideboard, a kitchen shelf or a covered porch; the two graduated sizes give good visual interest when grouped. The interiors show the darkening and mineral deposits consistent with years of holding water.
Condition and patina consistent with age. On each bucket one of the two side handles is missing, leaving a clean rivet point; the rust visible at those rivet points and on the interior base is surface-level and part of the overall vintage character.
Smaller bucket: approx. 7.7 in diameter x 11.8 in tall (19.5 cm x 30 cm). Larger bucket: approx. 9.1 in diameter x 14.8 in tall (23 cm x 37.5 cm).
