French wooden step stool
A French wooden step stool, the tabouret-marchepied, was once a quiet fixture of the French country kitchen and farmhouse -- used to reach a high shelf, steady a pot, or give a child a little extra height at the sink. This one is built from solid wood in the honest, unadorned manner of rural French joinery: a two-plank rectangular top with a hand-cut oval carry hole, four turned legs on one side and a pair of shaped bracket legs on the other, braced by a double dowel stretcher. The whole piece has been painted white at some point in its life, giving it a clean, washed look that works equally well in a farmhouse kitchen, a bathroom or a child's bedroom.
The white paint has aged beautifully into a softly distressed surface, with areas of natural warm wood showing through where use and time have worn away the finish. The bracket legs have a gentle curved silhouette that keeps the piece from feeling purely utilitarian, and the sturdy double stretcher speaks to the solid construction beneath. It sits flat and firm. As a small side table, a plant stand, a bedside perch for a book and a glass, or simply a rustic accent piece, it carries that unhurried, lived-in quality that French farmhouse objects do so naturally.
Condition and patina consistent with age. The white paint shows visible peeling and loss across the top surface, with natural wood exposed around the carry hole and in scattered patches -- all part of an honest, well-worn patina. Light wear to the base of the legs.
Approx. 13.3 in wide x 7.9 in deep x 7.1 in high (33.7 x 20 x 18 cm).
