French Wooden Garden Trug

A French wooden garden trug of traditional form, used historically for gathering fruits, vegetables or flowers during harvest. This type of flat-based wooden carrier with an arched bentwood handle was a standard tool in French rural households and kitchen gardens, particularly during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The French wooden garden trug offered a practical, open-topped container well suited to carrying fresh garden produce.

Constructed from thin flat-sawn planks joined at angled sides, creating a trapezoidal profile that widens slightly toward the top rim. The handle is formed from a single strip of bent wood, steam-curved into a smooth arch and slotted through the short end walls. The overall finish shows a dark grey-brown patina across all surfaces, consistent with long exposure and age. The wood grain remains visible throughout. Minor surface wear, small knocks and slight separation at certain joints are present and consistent with genuine working use over many decades. No repairs or restoration are apparent.

According to the seller description, dimensions are approximately 37cm x 23.5cm x 22cm / 14.6" x 9.3" x 8.7" (length x width x height excluding handle). The arched handle adds further height above the rim. The compact footprint makes it easy to place on a shelf, windowsill or tabletop.
