French Wooden Flour Sieve
A French wooden flour sieve of the type widely used in rural and domestic kitchens throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This French wooden flour sieve consists of two stacked circular bentwood frames joined by a fine wire mesh screen, the classic construction used by French millers and bakers to grade and refine flour before baking.
The bentwood frame is formed from thin strips of wood bent into a continuous circle and secured with small nails, a construction method typical of traditional French sieve makers. The outer face of the lower frame bears a handwritten or stamped letter "F" enclosed in an oval mark, along with what appears to be a cursive inscription below -- likely a maker or owner mark. The wire mesh screen is intact and shows age-consistent darkening and minor dust accumulation. The wood surface displays natural patina, minor surface marks, and age-related discoloration on the interior rim consistent with regular use. No significant cracks or structural damage are visible. The construction uses two separate frames -- the upper holding the mesh taut, the lower acting as a collar -- held together by a narrow woven fabric or cord band running around the circumference.
Dimensions as stated: 43cm diameter x 11.5cm height / 16.9" diameter x 4.5" height. The generous diameter places this in the larger category of domestic or small-scale professional sieves, suitable for sifting quantities of flour in a farmhouse or bakery context.
Now primarily sought as a decorative object, this sieve suits farmhouse-style interiors, kitchen display, or collections of antique culinary tools. Its scale and visible age marks give it an honest, well-used character consistent with genuine working objects of the period.
