French Wicker Market Basket
A classic French wicker market basket -- the panier de marche -- woven in natural rattan with a generous oval body and a tall, tightly braided single handle. Pieces like this were a fixture of French daily life throughout the mid-to-late twentieth century, carried through open-air markets from Provence to Brittany to hold vegetables, baguettes and flowers. The construction is unmistakably handmade: vertical stakes rise from a flat woven base, bound at regular intervals by horizontal weavers, with a wide open-work pattern in the body that makes the basket feel light to carry even when full.
The proportions are well balanced and practical -- deep enough to hold a proper load, wide enough to lay long stems or a wrapped bouquet flat inside. The braided rope handle has a satisfying heft, and the sturdy border finish at the rim shows the care typical of French artisan basketry. At home, it works just as well on a farmhouse kitchen counter holding onions and garlic, on an entryway bench corralling scarves and gloves, or styled on a shelf as a warm piece of French country texture.
Condition and patina consistent with age. Light wear to the border weave and a few minor splits in individual stakes visible on close inspection, fully in keeping with honest vintage use.
Approx. 18.9 in wide x 12.6 in deep x 13.8 in high (48 x 32 x 35 cm), measured to the top of the basket body, not including the handle.
