French wicker laundry basket

A French wicker laundry basket -- known in France as a panier a linge -- hand-woven from natural rattan, most likely produced in the 1960s to 1970s and consistent with utility basketry made for everyday household use across rural France. The form is a classic farmhouse type: wide, low and oval, designed to carry a full load of washing. The construction technique and the density of the weave point to skilled hand work rather than machine production.

The basket has a gently flared oval body with a flat-coil base and sides that taper slightly inward toward the bottom. The weave alternates between tight rattan cane rows on the lower body and a more open pattern toward the rim, a detail clearly visible in the interior shots. The border is finished with a thick twisted rattan rope rim, and two loop handles are formed from the same twisted rattan, one on each short end. The overall tone is a warm honey-amber, deepened by age to a slightly darker caramel toward the base. No maker's mark, label or stamp is visible in any photo.

The basket is in honest used condition appropriate to its age. The exterior shows general surface wear, minor scuffs and darkening consistent with decades of handling. The base, visible in photo 6, shows more pronounced patina and some loosening or fraying of individual cane ends in places, with a few broken or protruding strands. The structure is intact and the handles are firm. No repairs are evident. Sold as pictured.

Dimensions without handles: approximately 18.9 x 14.6 in (48 x 37 cm), height approximately 7.9 in (20 cm). These are seller-confirmed measurements. The basket is a practical size for laundry, log storage, blankets or toy storage, and works equally well as a rustic display prop or farmhouse-style room accent.
