French Wicker Demijohn

A French wicker demijohn -- known in France as a bonbonne -- encased from base to neck in hand-woven rattan, with a dark green glass body peeking through at the neck and a snug cork stopper seated above. This type of large wicker-wrapped carboy was used across French households and cellars for storing and transporting wine, cider or eau-de-vie, the woven shell protecting the glass from knocks and making the heavy vessel easier to carry by two people at once. The form is classic French farmhouse utility at its most appealing.

The rattan weave shifts register beautifully from the broad open diamond pattern on the lower body to a tighter, more intricate herringbone collar wrapping the neck -- a detail of genuine craft that speaks to hand-basketry tradition. Two generously sized twisted rattan handles arch from the shoulder, sturdy and well-shaped. The warm honey-brown tones of aged rattan and the deep green glass neck make this a handsome accent piece equally at home on a kitchen floor, a hallway sideboard or a garden room shelf. Filled with dried botanicals or used simply as a sculptural object, it holds the room with quiet confidence.

Condition and patina consistent with age. Light surface wear on the wicker consistent with honest use; a few ends of rattan are slightly frayed at the body, as is natural in pieces of this age and character.

Approx. 12.5 in wide x 16.5 in high (32 x 42 cm).
