French wicker demijohn bottle

A handsome French wicker demijohn bottle -- known in France as a bonbonne -- entirely hand-wrapped in tightly braided pine-needle straw held in place by a framework of slender willow rods and iron wire. Beneath the wicker shell, the green glass body remains intact, its mouth fitted with a small wooden collar that anchors a thick twisted-rope carrying handle. Vessels of this type were widely used across rural France through the early twentieth century to transport and store wine, eau-de-vie and vinegar on farms and in cellars, and the robust wicker casing protected the glass during daily handling.

The braiding is dense and confident, worked in a herringbone pattern that becomes finer toward the shoulder and neck, giving the piece a quietly graphic silhouette that reads well on a shelf or tabletop. The rope handle arcs cleanly from collar to shoulder and still carries its full strength. A piece like this brings an easy warmth to a French country kitchen, a bar cart, a library shelf or an entryway -- equally at home holding dried botanicals or standing alone as a decorative object.

Condition and patina consistent with age. The wicker shows the expected dryness and light fraying of an object with many decades of use, and the iron wire bindings have a natural surface rust; the green glass beneath appears sound.

Approx. 9.1 in wide x 12.6 in tall (23 x 32 cm).
