A sturdy French wicker bread basket of the kind once found behind the counter of every boulangerie and village market stall, where baguettes and country loaves were displayed at an easy-to-reach angle. Hand-woven from slender willow or rattan canes in a warm honey tone, it has a plywood base and the characteristic wedge profile of classic French baker's display trays -- tall at the back, low at the front -- that gave customers a clear view of the goods inside.

The weave is confident and tight along the lower body, opening to a more open diamond pattern higher up the walls, a construction detail that speaks to a practiced hand rather than a factory mold. The sloped silhouette is immediately graphic and works just as naturally in a home as it did in a shop: set it on a kitchen counter to hold baguettes or fresh produce, lay it on a console table to corral mail and magazines, or use it on an open pantry shelf as a display tray. The warm caramel color of the cane sits easily alongside linen, oak and aged wood.

Condition and patina consistent with age. The plywood base shows light surface marks and gentle darkening from use, and a small number of individual cane ends are slightly lifted at the base border -- all fully in keeping with a well-used working basket and part of its honest character.
