French White Ironstone Oval Platter

An antique French white ironstone oval platter of the kind that once anchored the table of a French bourgeois household or farmhouse kitchen, where a generous oval plat de service was an everyday necessity rather than a luxury. Ironstone -- the dense, durable faience blanche produced widely across France from the mid-nineteenth century onward -- was the workhorse of the French table, and this piece carries all the honest character of that tradition.

The form is classic and well balanced: a broad, gently scooped oval well edged by a flat, lipped rim, all covered in a smooth creamy white glaze that has mellowed to a soft, warm ivory. Turned over, the base reveals a single raised ridge running along the foot and an unglazed oval foot ring -- details consistent with period production. No maker's mark is legible on the base. The platter reads beautifully on a farmhouse sideboard, laid out for cheese or charcuterie, or simply displayed on a plate rack or open shelf among other French whites.

Condition and patina consistent with age. Light wear and minor age marks are visible along the outer rim and foot, and a small dark spot is present near the rim edge -- all in keeping with a piece that has lived a full French life.

Approx. 15.9 in long x 11 in wide x 2.2 in deep (40.5 x 28 x 5.5 cm).
