French White Ceramic Soup Tureen Footed Bowl Lion Head Handles Vintage 1410261

French white ceramic soup tureen

A classic French white ceramic soup tureen -- soupiere in French -- presented without its lid, raising it into a handsome open footed bowl equally at home on a dining table or a shelf. Covered in a warm off-white glaze with the faintest warm blush tone, it sits on a stepped circular pedestal and carries a pair of small sculpted lion-head handles on either side. The soup tureen has been a fixture of French bourgeois and farmhouse tables since at least the 18th century, and examples like this one in plain white faience were produced well into the 20th century by regional potteries across France.

What catches the eye is the applied relief on the body: a confident spray of acanthus scrolls molded in the round and glazed in the same creamy white, giving the piece a quiet classical character without straying into fussiness. The glaze shows the natural variation of period ceramic production -- small surface specks, gentle unevenness -- that mark a hand-crafted object rather than an industrial one. Without its lid, the tureen becomes a versatile display vessel: fill it with fruit, arrange a few branches or simply let it anchor a vignette on a sideboard the way French decorators have for generations.

Condition and patina consistent with age. The glaze is intact overall, with light surface wear and minor darkening in the recesses of the relief decoration, all expected for a vintage piece of this character.

Approx. 8.3 in wide x 5.9 in high (21 x 15 cm), measured without the handles.
