French Wooden Garden Trug

A classic French wooden garden trug of the type used throughout rural France for carrying harvested fruits, vegetables and cut flowers. The French wooden garden trug design has remained consistent for generations, built for practical daily use in kitchen gardens and orchards. This example shows the characteristic tapered rectangular form with angled sides that allow easy access to the contents.

Constructed from pine boards joined with small nails, the trug features the traditional arched bentwood handle rising from the centre. The handle is formed from a thin strip of wood bent into a smooth arc and shows a lighter, more weathered tone than the body boards. The interior base shows honest wear and darkening from use, consistent with age and regular handling. The exterior boards retain visible wood grain throughout. The sides flare outward slightly from base to rim, a practical design that aids stability when set down. No maker's mark or stamp is visible in the photos. The overall structure remains solid with no missing boards or broken joints observed.

Dimensions as listed: 43cm x 28.5cm x 22.5cm / 16.9" x 11.2" x 8.9" (length x width x height excluding handle). The arched handle adds further height above the rim.

A functional antique with good decorative potential. The worn patina makes it well suited for use as a display trug for dried botanicals, bread rolls, rolled linen or seasonal produce. It also appeals to collectors of French rural domestic objects and garden antiques.
