French Vintage Wire Basket

A French vintage wire basket of the type widely used for harvesting fruit and vegetables in kitchen gardens and smallholdings across rural France. This oval galvanised wire form is a classic example of utilitarian French country craft, built for repeated daily use rather than display, and it carries the honest wear that comes with genuine age and service.

The basket is constructed from fine galvanised steel mesh woven in a close diamond pattern and reinforced with heavier gauge structural wires running along the base and up the sides at regular intervals. The rim is neatly finished with a twisted wire edge. The arched carrying handle is formed from two heavier wires that converge at the top through a turned cylindrical wooden grip, weathered and worn consistent with regular handling. The wood shows small surface pitting and natural grain. The basket sits directly on the base mesh with no separate foot ring. Some light surface rust is visible on the structural wires, and minor distortion to the mesh in places, all consistent with age and use.

Dimensions as stated by the seller: 52cm x 33cm x 27cm / 20.5" x 13" x 10.6". These measurements include the handle height.
