Woven entirely from natural rattan, this French vintage wicker serving tray is a generous rectangular form built for both daily use and easy display. The open-weave body is held within a low raised border and finished on all four sides with a thick, neatly worked braid -- a detail associated with French artisan basket-making that flourished through the mid-twentieth century. Two arched loop handles are formed from twisted rattan cords and integrate seamlessly into the border, giving the tray its balanced, confident silhouette.

The warm honey tone of the rattan has deepened with age into a layered amber that no new piece can replicate. The interplay between the airy open weave of the surface and the dense, rope-like braiding at the perimeter gives this tray real visual depth. In French homes this type of paniere de service was kept on the kitchen table or sideboard, ready to carry bread, bottles or morning coffee.
