French Wicker Demijohn Carboy

A French wicker demijohn carboy of the type long used in wine-producing regions of France for storing and transporting large quantities of wine, cider, or vinegar. Known in French as a dame jeanne or bonbonne, this form of large glass vessel encased in woven rattan dates from the late 19th to mid 20th century and remains one of the most recognizable objects of French rural domestic life.

The green-tinted glass bottle is fully encased in a tightly woven rattan and wicker surround, which serves both as protective casing and carrying frame. Two looped wicker handles are positioned on either side at shoulder height, allowing the vessel to be lifted and tilted. The neck of the bottle is wrapped with a finer wicker collar that transitions into radiating spokes down the shoulder, giving the upper section a more intricate weave than the open diagonal lattice work of the body. The base is finished with a densely woven flat circular base. The wicker shows age-appropriate wear and surface marks consistent with genuine use. The glass neck retains traces of an old wax or pitch seal. No cracks or breaks are observed in the wicker structure.

The vessel measures approximately 32cm wide x 37cm tall / 12.6" wide x 14.6" tall as stated by the seller. These dimensions confirm a mid-size French wicker demijohn carboy, suitable for display rather than heavy use.
