French Vintage School Map North Africa
Produced by Editions Rossignol of Montmorillon (Vienne), these two double-sided French vintage school map North Africa panels were printed for classroom use in France during the 1950s or early 1960s, the period when Algeria was still administered as French departments. Rossignol was the leading French publisher of pedagogical wall charts, and their maps are now collected as historic documents as much as decorative objects.
The first side, numbered N15, is titled "Afrique du Nord" and covers the full Maghreb region including Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia, with physical relief shown in layered ochre, amber and pale green tones indicating altitude bands from 0 to over 2000 metres. City populations are indicated by graduated red dot symbols, and a small inset precipitation map appears in the lower right corner. The reverse, numbered N16, focuses on "Algerie - Traits Physiques et Ressources", detailing physical geography alongside economic resources such as Gaz, Petrole, Phosphates, Alfa, and agricultural zones. Both maps are printed in clear lithographic colour with French-language place names and annotations, reflecting the colonial administrative geography of the era including the Departement de la Saoura and Departement des Oasis designations.
Each panel measures approximately 90cm x 75cm / 35.4" x 29.5" as stated in the seller description. The paper stock is sturdy, consistent with Rossignol school map production, and the maps show age-appropriate toning and minor handling wear consistent with classroom use. Overall condition is good with no significant tears noted in the photos.
A two-sided document of this type appeals to collectors of French colonial cartography, mid-century ephemera, and North African history, and works well framed as a large-format wall piece in a study or library setting.
