French Vintage Coat Hook

A French vintage coat hook of the type commonly found in hallways, schools and public buildings across France during the mid-twentieth century. The hook combines a turned wooden finial at the top with a curved wooden lower rest, both connected by a forged iron rod that sweeps in a gentle S-curve. The iron mounting bracket, fixed at the midpoint of the rod, retains its original hardware with four screw holes for wall fixing. This is a classic French vintage coat hook form associated with the 1950s.

The wooden elements are turned from what appears to be fruitwood or beech, finished in a warm amber-brown tone with visible lathe-turned ring detailing on both the upper knob and the lower cradle piece. The lower rest curves outward in a scroll form, designed to support a coat collar or bag handle without slipping. The iron rod and bracket show surface rust and patina consistent with age and use, while the wooden parts remain solid with minor wear to the finish. No cracks or breaks are visible in any of the photos. The mounting plate is a simple pressed iron bracket with a butterfly or cross form, pierced for four screws.
