French vintage ice bucket
A French vintage ice bucket of the mid-twentieth century, combining a highly polished chrome upper body with a turned wood lower section and a pair of angular chrome loop handles. The seau a champagne -- the champagne bucket -- was a fixture of French cafe and domestic entertaining culture from the 1930s onward, and this example carries all the confident, no-nonsense character of that tradition. The chrome upper half is bright and mirror-like; the pale wood base, banded in two rings, gives the piece a warm, grounded quality that keeps it from feeling purely industrial.
The base bears an embossed circular stamp reading LEROY, a French metalware maker. The twin handles are cast with a clean rectangular profile, a detail that reads as quietly Art Deco in feeling. At home on a bar cart, a sideboard or a drinks table, it works equally well holding a bottle of wine on ice or standing empty as a handsome vessel for a plant or a bunch of dried grasses -- as one can see it used here. The interior shows the honest darkening of a piece that has genuinely lived its life.
Condition and patina consistent with age. The exterior chrome carries a network of light surface scratches visible in raking light, and the interior shows the oxidation and minor spotting typical of a working bar piece; structurally sound throughout.
Approx. 7.7 in tall (19.5 cm).
