French Vintage Bread Board
A French vintage bread board of the type found in rural kitchens and farmhouses throughout the late 19th and early 20th century. Used daily for cutting bread and preparing food, this French vintage bread board shows the honest patina of genuine long-term kitchen use, making it a sought-after piece among collectors of European country antiques.
Cut from a single plank of light hardwood, likely beech, the board features a shaped handle at the top with a hanging hole, and two curved cutouts at the shoulders where the handle meets the body -- a classic form seen on French provincial boards of this period. Both faces show dense knife scarring across the surface, along with darker staining from food and age concentrated toward the lower left edge and at the base. Several small worm holes are visible across the surface and edges, consistent with age and rural storage conditions. The wood has dried to a warm mid-brown tone with visible grain throughout. The handle top shows a squared-off profile, slightly darker than the body, suggesting heavier handling over years of use. No maker's mark or stamp is visible on either face.
Dimensions as stated by the seller: 23cm x 38cm x 2.5cm / 9.1" x 15" x 1". The board is photographed alongside a standard wine bottle (75cl) for scale, confirming it as a medium-to-large format kitchen board suited to bread service or charcuterie presentation.
Pieces like this are regularly used today as serving boards, wall-hung kitchen decor, or as props in food photography. The surface wear and patina are consistent with authentic age and add to its appeal as a decorative or functional antique kitchen object.
