French transferware footed bowl
Marked clearly on the base with the blue rectangular cartouche "GROSEILLES / U & Cie / SARREGUEMINES", this French transferware footed bowl comes from one of Lorraine's most celebrated faience manufacturers, Utzschneider et Cie of Sarreguemines, whose printed earthenwares were a fixture of the French bourgeois table throughout the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The pattern name, Groseilles -- French for gooseberries and currants -- announces the decoration with characteristic directness.
The bowl sits on a low footed base and presents a gently flared silhouette that feels equally at home serving fruit or holding a generous bunch of dried botanicals on a shelf. Around the exterior, a naturalistic spray of gooseberries, lobed leaves and thorny stems is rendered in cool blue-grey transfer print against a warm cream ground -- graphic and botanical at once. The interior repeats the theme with smaller sprigs of gooseberries and currants arranged around the well, framed by a finely sponged lace border at the rim. The sponged border also edges the foot ring, a detail typical of Sarreguemines's decorative vocabulary of this period. A classic piece of French farmhouse ceramics that reads confidently in a country kitchen or on an open dresser.
Condition and patina consistent with age. Some warm brown staining visible in the well and scattered spots on the exterior glaze, and light wear to the sponged border at the foot -- all honest marks of a piece that has been used and loved.
Approx. 10.8 in long x 4.3 in high (27.5 x 11 cm).
