French Terracotta Tian Dish

A traditional French terracotta tian dish of the type long used in Provencal households for slow-cooking gratin and vegetable preparations. The French terracotta tian dish form is one of the most practical and enduring shapes from southern French rural pottery, and this example carries the hallmarks of authentic regional production: hand-formed red clay, partially glazed interior, and the characteristic low, wide profile that gives even heat distribution in a wood-fired or conventional oven.

The body is made from unglazed red terracotta on the exterior, with a dark reddish-brown lead-free glaze coating the interior and the upper rim. Glaze drips are visible along the outer rim, which is consistent with traditional dipping application. Four small loop handles are evenly spaced around the perimeter, formed by pinching the clay before firing. A stamped maker's mark is clearly visible on the exterior wall, reading "S.I.R. Drdra" or similar — partially legible but confirming industrial or semi-industrial production, likely mid-20th century. The base is unglazed and shows fire marks and natural variations from kiln firing. There is visible wear and surface patina consistent with genuine use, including light scratches on the interior glaze and minor rough areas on the exterior.

The dish measures 37.5cm in diameter and 9cm in height (14.8" x 3.5"). These are generous dimensions that make this piece functional as well as visually distinctive on a table or kitchen shelf.
