French Terracotta Bowl
From the pottery traditions of Provence comes this traditional tian, a classic French terracotta bowl designed for both cooking and serving. These wide, shallow vessels were essential in French kitchens for preparing gratins, baked vegetables, and regional specialties that required even heat distribution.
The bowl displays the characteristic warm amber glaze typical of Provencal pottery, with natural variations and subtle speckles that reveal the artisanal firing process. Two sturdy handles extend from opposite sides, facilitating easy transport from oven to table. The glazed interior shows honest signs of kitchen use, while the unglazed base reveals the natural terracotta clay beneath.
This substantial tian measures 31.5cm in diameter by 7.5cm deep, equivalent to approximately 12.4 inches wide by 3 inches deep. The generous proportions make it suitable for family-sized portions, while the shallow profile ensures even cooking of gratins and vegetable dishes.
Today this vintage tian serves equally well as functional cookware or as a distinctive serving piece for Mediterranean-inspired meals. The warm tones and rustic form complement both traditional and contemporary table settings.
