French terracotta pottery bowl
Stamped clearly on the exterior, this French terracotta pottery bowl bears the impressed mark of Poterie Not Freres, located at Mas Saintes Puelles in the Aude department of the Languedoc region. Turned from dense, warm red clay and fired to a confident rustic form, it belongs to a long tradition of utilitarian French country earthenware produced in the villages of the Lauragais plain, where potters supplied farm kitchens with everyday vessels for mixing, rinsing and storing.
The interior carries a fluid amber-red lead glaze that pools slightly toward the flat well at the center, catching the light with a depth that no modern reproduction quite manages to replicate. The unglazed exterior shows the raw red clay with its natural surface texture. A molded double-ridge rim runs around the lip, interrupted by two small pouring spouts positioned opposite each other, a detail that speaks to practical workshop design. On a kitchen shelf, a country table or grouped with other French earthenware, the bowl holds its own with quiet, handsome presence.
Condition and patina consistent with age. The unglazed base shows fire marks and light surface attrition; the interior glaze is intact and characterful with minor crazing in keeping with the period and firing method.
Approx. 9 in wide x 3.5 in high (23 x 9 cm).
