French terracotta glazed baking dish

An oval French terracotta glazed baking dish of generous proportion, made in France and stamped clearly on the unglazed base with a circular cartouche reading FRANCE. Formed from red earthenware clay in the tradition of the plat a gratin -- the workhorse oval gratin dish found in French country kitchens from Burgundy to the Basque coast -- it carries a warm amber glaze that deepens toward the center of the interior. Pieces of this type were produced in significant numbers by French faience and earthenware workshops throughout the mid-twentieth century, prized for their even heat distribution and honest, unpretentious form.

The dish is pleasingly well balanced: its low, straight sides and broadly oval footprint make it as handsome displayed on an open kitchen shelf as it is practical for oven use. The interior glaze is smooth and richly colored, catching the light with a gentle sheen. The exterior walls are left in the natural bisque-orange of the clay, lightly speckled, which gives the piece its characteristic rustic character. Small dark kiln-fired inclusions are visible in the clay body, a detail consistent with hand-production methods of the period.

Condition and patina consistent with age. Light crazing is visible across the glaze, and a few small glaze losses appear along the upper rim -- all of which are visible in the photographs and entirely in keeping with a piece that has lived a full kitchen life.
