French Terracotta Fruit Drainer

A French terracotta fruit drainer of the type known regionally as a tian or egouttoir, used in country kitchens to drain small fruits and vegetables after washing. This French terracotta fruit drainer belongs to a long tradition of utilitarian redware pottery produced across rural France, where practical earthenware forms were wheel-thrown and glazed for everyday household use. The form is shallow and wide, purpose-built for draining rather than storage or serving.

The interior and rim are covered in a lead-type honey glaze in golden ochre, decorated with freely brushed green copper-oxide splashes that bleed and feather across the surface in an organic, uncontrolled pattern typical of folk pottery traditions. The exterior body is left in unglazed red terracotta, with only a narrow glaze drip visible near the rim. Drainage holes are pierced through the base and lower walls in an irregular cluster, functional and hand-punched. The base shows a raised foot ring with additional drainage holes. There is a dark glaze pooling visible on the interior base, consistent with kiln firing behavior. No maker's mark or stamp is visible in the photos. Condition is consistent with age and use -- surface wear and minor crazing are present throughout, as expected for antique earthenware of this type.

The piece measures approximately 24cm diameter x 7cm height / 9.4" diameter x 2.8" height, as stated by the seller. The wide, flat profile and generous diameter make it well-suited for draining berries, cherries, or small garden vegetables, as originally intended.

Beyond its original kitchen function, this piece works well as a display object or catch-all bowl. The hand-painted green and ochre glaze pattern, the rustic terracotta body, and the pierced base make it a distinctive example of French country pottery that appeals to collectors of regional European earthenware.
