French Terracotta Earthenware Bowl
Stamped clearly on the exterior, "POTERIE NOT FRERES" identifies this as a French terracotta earthenware bowl from a traditional French pottery workshop, the kind that supplied households and farm kitchens across the country well into the early twentieth century. Thrown from dense red clay, the bowl features a broad, shallow form with a rolled and ridged rim, two small squared tab handles, and a subtle pour notch -- all hallmarks of a piece made to be used daily rather than admired from a distance.
The interior is covered in a warm, deep amber-brown glaze that has developed the gentle depth that only comes with long years of use. The exterior below the rim is left unglazed, as was standard practice in French country potteries where fired earthenware was a workhorse of the kitchen and table. Pieces from named regional potteries like this one are increasingly collected by those who appreciate honest, handmade craft, and the bowl translates naturally into a modern home -- holding fruit on a farmhouse counter, displayed on an open shelf, or grouped with other French glazed pottery.
Condition and patina consistent with age. Light wear and minor surface roughness are visible along the unglazed base and lower exterior, and there is some glaze variation around the rim typical of the firing process.
Approx. 9.25 in wide x 3.5 in high (23.5 x 9 cm).
