French Stoneware Bottle

This authentic French stoneware bottle exemplifies traditional pottery craftsmanship from rural France. Dating from the late 19th to early 20th century, this vessel served as storage for wine, cider, and other beverages in French households and taverns throughout the countryside.

The salt-glazed finish displays natural color variations characteristic of this pottery technique. The upper portion shows grey-blue tones transitioning to warm terracotta and brown hues across the bulbous body. Horizontal throwing ridges remain clearly visible, documenting the potter's hand-throwing method on the wheel. The narrow neck features a flanged rim designed to accommodate cork stoppers.

Standing 12 inches (30.5cm) tall, this substantial piece exhibits authentic age patina and minor surface wear consistent with decades of utilitarian use. The rustic finish and honest wear patterns add to its genuine country pottery character. Small imperfections and color variations reflect the handmade nature of traditional French stoneware production.

This vessel serves as both a functional container and decorative accent, suitable for country kitchen displays or antique pottery collections focused on French provincial artifacts.
