French Stoneware Mixing Bowl

A large French stoneware mixing bowl of the type commonly found in provincial French kitchens and farmhouses, used daily for mixing bread dough, salad, or preserving. This French stoneware mixing bowl displays the sturdy, utilitarian character typical of rural French pottery production from the late 19th to early 20th century.

The bowl is wheel-thrown in a dense, sandy-toned stoneware clay body, left unglazed on the exterior lower body and base, where the raw clay shows a warm buff-beige color with natural firing variations and surface marks consistent with age and use. The interior and the wide flat rim are coated in a cream-white glaze with a glossy, slightly uneven surface, showing characteristic pooling and variation. The exterior upper section transitions from the glazed rim into the unglazed body with a distinct horizontal line, a design typical of French provincial utilitarian ware. The bowl sits on a low, well-defined foot ring. No maker's mark, stamp, or signature is visible on the base, which shows natural unglazed stoneware with age darkening around the foot ring edge. Minor surface wear and age marks are present throughout, consistent with genuine use over decades.

The bowl measures 33cm diameter by 15cm height, which converts to approximately 13.0" wide by 5.9" tall. This is a substantial size, making it genuinely functional for large-batch cooking or as a display centrepiece.
