French stoneware jar
A compact, bulbous French stoneware jar of the kind that once lined the shelves of French farmhouse larders and country kitchens, used for storing preserves, lard or salt. Wheel-thrown from a coarse, sandy clay body, it has the honest weight and hand-shaped character of a rural craft tradition that was still very much alive in France well into the early twentieth century.
What sets this French stoneware jar apart is the dramatic two-tone surface: a generous pour of amber-ochre glaze covers the upper half and neck, pooling in warm, honey-toned drips before giving way to the raw, unglazed lower body, all grit and texture. The interior carries the same glaze, smooth and dark. The profile is satisfying -- a broad belly that tapers down to a small, sturdy foot and opens at the top through a gently collared rim. A small visible firing crack near the neck and scattered dark speckling in the glaze read as part of the kiln story rather than any structural concern. On a kitchen shelf, a windowsill or a rustic table setting, it holds dried herbs, wooden spoons or a single stem just as naturally as it held provisions a century ago.
Condition and patina consistent with age. There is a small firing crack visible near the neck, light kiln grit on the base, and natural glaze variation across the surface -- all characteristic of hand-fired country stoneware.
Approx. 4.0 in tall (10.2 cm).
