French Stoneware Jam Pot

A cylindrical French stoneware jam pot dating to the 19th century, typical of the utilitarian preserve vessels produced in provincial French potteries during that period. This French stoneware jam pot belongs to a well-documented category of kitchen storage ceramics used primarily for jams and preserves, though such pots occasionally served for meat confit as well. The form is consistent with pieces made across multiple French regions throughout the 1800s.

The pot is covered in a lead glaze in a golden ochre yellow tone, applied across the full exterior and interior rim. The surface shows visible age-related wear including dark grey mineral deposits, glaze crazing, and patches where the glaze has worn away at the base and rim, exposing the terracotta body beneath. The upper section features a raised collar with three incised horizontal grooves running around the circumference, and two small round stub handles positioned symmetrically on either side at mid-collar height. These decorative and functional elements are characteristic of 19th-century French provincial pottery production. No maker's mark or stamp is visible in the photographs.

The pot measures approximately 19cm x 19cm as stated by the seller, which converts to roughly 7.5" x 7.5" (height x diameter). The walls are of substantial thickness, consistent with stoneware construction, and the base appears unglazed or lightly glazed. Condition is used, with honest wear commensurate with age: chips and glaze loss around the rim, surface staining, and general patina throughout.
