French Stoneware Jam Pot

A French stoneware jam pot dating to the 19th century, typical of the utilitarian preserve jars produced in provincial French potteries during that period. This French stoneware jam pot belongs to a well-documented category of domestic earthenware used primarily for storing jams, preserves, and occasionally meat confit in French rural households.

The body is cylindrical and wheel-thrown, covered in an ochre-amber lead glaze that shows characteristic firing variations across the surface — darker pooled areas and lighter patches are visible, the result of kiln atmosphere rather than damage. Two small rounded lug handles are applied at mid-body height, a typical feature of this pot form that allowed cloth or paper covers to be tied securely in place. Three incised horizontal lines run around the upper shoulder, providing the only decorative element on an otherwise plain form. The glaze is shiny where applied thickly and matte where thinner, consistent with period French production. The unglazed base, visible in the photos, shows raw terracotta clay with natural firing marks and old residue consistent with age and use. No maker's stamp or pottery mark is visible on the base. Minor surface wear, glaze crazing and age-related patina are present throughout — consistent with a piece of this age and origin.

Dimensions as stated by the seller: 16.5cm diameter x 16.5cm tall / 6.5" x 6.5". The pot holds a generous volume and sits evenly on its flat unglazed base.
