French Stoneware Jam Pot
A French stoneware jam pot of the type produced in rural France throughout the 19th century, wheel-thrown and covered in a glossy ochre glaze typical of provincial pottery workshops of that era. These cylindrical vessels were standard household storage containers, used primarily for fruit preserves and jams, though they could occasionally serve for meat confit or other pantry staples. The form and glaze colour are consistent with French regional production from the latter half of the 1800s.
The body is cylindrical with a slightly wider mouth and a rolled rim, finished with two incised horizontal bands running below the lip. Two small solid lug handles are applied symmetrically on opposite sides, just below the banding — a classic feature of this French stoneware jam pot form. The glaze is a warm golden yellow to amber tone, applied overall including the interior, with visible variation in intensity across the surface. Areas of lighter glaze and bare clay show through at the base and in patches across the body, evidence of natural firing variation. The interior reveals the wheel-thrown spiral marks of the original potter. No maker's mark or stamp is visible in the photos. Glaze wear and minor surface losses are present at the base and rim, consistent with age and use.
Dimensions as listed: 14cm wide x 15cm tall / 5.5" wide x 5.9" tall. These proportions place it in the smaller standard size for French preserve pots of this period.
A practical object with strong visual presence, this pot works well displayed on open kitchen shelving, used as a utensil holder, or grouped with other French earthenware as part of a farmhouse-style interior. It is also a solid entry point for collectors of 19th-century French provincial ceramics.
