French Stoneware Gratin Dish

An oval French stoneware gratin dish of the type produced in regional French potteries for everyday kitchen use. The French stoneware gratin dish form -- low-sided, wide and oval -- was the standard vessel for slow-roasted meats, gratins and vegetable bakes cooked directly in the hearth or oven. The piece carries the patina of genuine age and repeated use.

The exterior is covered in a warm amber-brown unglazed stoneware body, fired to a dense, solid finish. The interior bears a pale ochre-tan glaze, partially matte with isolated areas of higher sheen where the glaze pooled during firing. The glaze surface shows fine crazing throughout, consistent with age. The underside, visible in the photos, is unglazed and shows heavy fire marks, carbon deposits and deep scratch marks from decades of use on stone or iron surfaces. A partial impressed mark or stamp is visible on the base, reading partially as what appears to be a size or maker reference -- buyers are encouraged to examine the base photo closely. The rim is slightly uneven, typical of hand-formed provincial pottery. No chips, cracks or repairs are visible from the photos, though the surface shows honest wear consistent with use.

Dimensions as stated by the seller: 35.5cm x 24.5cm x 6cm / 14.0" x 9.6" x 2.4". The generous footprint makes this a substantial serving or display piece.
