French Stoneware Gratin Dish

A sturdy French stoneware gratin dish of the type produced in quantity by French provincial potteries throughout the mid-twentieth century. This French stoneware gratin dish follows the classic format of French kitchen ceramics: a rectangular form with gently rounded corners, designed to go directly from oven to table. It carries the utilitarian character associated with everyday French farmhouse cooking.

The exterior is covered in a deep brown glaze, applied evenly across the sides and base, with a slightly matte, textured finish. The interior and rim carry a pale golden yellow glaze, fired to a low sheen with visible fine speckling in the clay body — typical of sand-tempered provincial stoneware. The glaze on the interior shows the natural variation common to hand-finished kiln work. The base, shown in the final photo, displays wear consistent with regular oven use: darkened scorch marks, surface scratches and general patina from years of cooking. No cracks, chips or repairs are visible in the photos. No maker's mark or pottery stamp is visible on the base.
